历史
日本传统的表演艺术有歌舞伎、能剧、狂言、文乐、漫才、落语等。能是一种日本独有的古典歌舞剧，演员须带着面具（能面）表演。歌舞伎起源于战国时代末期，演员必须是男性，是比能更大众化的艺术。文乐又名人形净琉璃，是一种木偶戏。
日本绘画有单色画和双色画之分。浮世绘是日本画中最广为人知的一种，对西方的印象派产生了不小的影响。日本漆器工艺在世界享负盛名，“Japan”一字除了解作“日本”，亦为漆器之意。日本漆器的特色是以金银作为装饰花纹，即所谓的“莳绘”，以金、银屑嵌贴于漆液中，干后推光处理，表现出极尽华贵的金银色泽，有时并以螺钿、银丝、沈金嵌出花纹花鸟草虫或吉祥图案，具有极高的艺术价值。
