方尾白姑鱼为辐鳍鱼纲鲈形目鲈亚目石首鱼科的其中一种，分布于西印度洋区，包括马达加斯加、从莫桑比克至南非伊丽莎白港海域，栖息深度15-300米，体长可达71公分，栖息在沿海沙泥底质海域，冬季为繁殖期，属肉食性，以鱼类及甲壳类为食，可做为食用鱼及游钓鱼。
