房角石学名Cameroceras)是一灭绝鹦鹉螺类。生存在奥陶纪中期劳伦大陆波罗的大陆西伯利亚大陆周遭的海洋[1][2]。巨大的房角石长度约为9米(30英尺),不过这个估计值的准确性仍有争议。即使如此,房角石仍然是古生代最巨大的无脊椎动物。从牠巨大的身躯来推测,房角石是一种生活在深海的伏击型掠食者,可能以生活在同时期海域的三叶虫海蝎头足纲无颌鱼为食。房角石于奥陶纪-志留纪灭绝事件后绝种,仅有少数存活至志留纪文洛克阶英语Wenlock (Silurian)[2]。 然而最近的研究表明房角石其实是滤食性动物。

房角石属于头足纲下的鹦鹉螺亚纲,和章鱼鱿鱼花枝等现生的头足类为近亲。透过这些现存的头足纲动物,尤其是同样具有壳的鹦鹉螺,科学家得以推敲出房角石的外型与习性。房角石拥有头部触须,身体与大部分的器官长在圆锥状的壳内。房角石会利用这些触手捕捉猎物,并送入被触手环绕形似鹦鹉喙的吻部,坚硬的喙部可以咬穿猎物的外壳,房角石口的内部可能同样具有齿舌,可以用来刮取猎物身上的软组织与内脏

体型

从房角石壳的化石碎片推断,房角石壳的长度(不包含头与触手部分)可达9米(30英尺),然而之后又将此数值下修[3]。1995年 Frey 估计房角石的全长仅有6米(20英尺)[2]。但不管是何种估计,房角石都被认为是古生代最大型的软体动物

BBC制作的《海底霸王》第1集第七危险海洋中出现,以巨型羽翅鲎为食。节目中的房角石被描述拥有很差的视力,仅能依靠嗅觉寻找猎物。
