帕罗马 5是沃尔特·巴德于1950年发现的球状星团。1955年阿尔伯特·乔治·威尔逊再次独立发现了它。在最初以巨蛇为名命名之后，被收录于帕罗马目录中的第五号。
由于银河系的引力作用，这个星团有一个分裂的过程。事实上，有许多恒恒星以星流的形式离开这个星团。这条星流的质量为5,000个太阳质量，长度为30,000光年[6]。该星团现时位于银河系中心的60.6 kly（18.6 kpc）。它的半长轴和半短轴之间的长宽比为 0.62±0.23，显示出明显的扁平化[7]。
