山号

山号（日语：山号）是佛教寺院的称号，例如“金龙山浅草寺”、“东叡山寛永寺”、“三缘山增上寺”等。

历史

寺院名加上山号源于中国禅宗制度，所以，印度、泰国等地的南传佛教、藏传佛教的寺院无山号。镰仓时代后期，伴随禅宗在日本普及，五山十刹制度制定后，瑞龙山南禅寺、镰仓五山的巨福山建长寺等禅宗寺院开始加上山号，[1]之后也影响其他宗派。寺院以所在的山名为山号，也有以佛教用语为山号者。但是，寺院并不一定有山号，例如东大寺、法隆寺就无山号。
