在完全相同的植物中,给一半的植物施肥,若施肥的植物与不施肥的植物的生长情况不同,且没有干扰因素的影响(如施肥使用了拖拉机,而对不施肥的植物没有使用),那么就有可能得出施肥会影响植物生长的结论。

对照实验(英语:controlled experiment)是在实验中设置比较对象(对照组)的一种科学方法,目的是为了与进行实验的对象(实验组)进行对照,减少实验中不确定的变数带来的影响,以之来显示出实验的结果。使用对照实验可以增强实验的可信度。

进行实验时,要同时进行对照实验,是因为要在同一环境下得出两种实验结果的资料用作定性及定量的对比分析。同一时间进行对照实验可测出实验在环境因素改变下所作出的改变。
