书皮是一种覆盖内页的保护性封皮。大概最早的形式是以档案为基础。如档案内的内容不用时常更换,就便用绳,或胶水,把内页固定于书皮内。在19世纪,由于书籍贵重,人们用木板、皮革、金、银为书皮。随着技术的发展,书的价格下降,用木板等材料为书皮,不再合乎经济。取而代之的有布和纸。而用布和纸,人们还可以在其上加以印刷。使书更精美。
书皮分类
有硬皮(hardback)和 软皮(paperback)。但亦有其他形式。
- 硬皮(hardback),泛指书皮厚而硬,大小和书页不同。书皮的材料,通常是用再造纸压制而成,外头包以其他纸,用以修饰。而因硬皮的关系,书面与书脊之间有一条坑,方便打开。硬皮多数用在大型书或经典上,例如字典、词典、圣经、孙子兵法。
- 软皮(paperback),泛指书皮溥而软,大小和书页一样。书皮的材料五花八门。现今的软皮书,通常都带点胶质,以加强保护。
有时,于书皮外,还会加上另一书皮,包裹全书。
