Kun — Yerning Quyoshga nisbatan toʻla aylanish davri; bir kecha-kunduzga teng boʻlgan vaqt, sutka. Davomiyligi 24 soat bilan oʻlchanadi. Bu vaqt ikki xil — haqiqiy Quyosh sutkasi (HQS) va oʻrtacha Quyosh sutkasi (OʻQS) deyiluvchi oʻlchovlarga ega. HQS ikkita ketma-ket keladigan haqiqiy tush (yoki haqiqiy yarim kecha) vaqtlari orasidagi vaqt bilan oʻlchanadi. HQS, Quyosh yillik koʻrinma yoʻlining osmon ekvatoriga qiyaligi (ogʻish burchagi 23° 26’) va ekliptika (Quyosh yillik koʻrinma yoʻli) boʻylab harakatning notekisligi tufayli oʻzgarib turadi va shu tufayli undan amalda foydalanib boʻlmaydi. Amalda HQS ning yil davomida oʻrtacha qiymati — oʻrtacha Quyosh sutkasi — kunning uzunligi sifatida foydalaniladi. Bu vaqt osmon ekvatori boʻylab, yil davomida, tekis harakatlanadigan oʻrtacha Quyosh deyiluvchi faraziy Quyosh markaziga nisbatan Yerning oʻz oʻqi atrofida aylanish davri bilan oʻlchanadi. [1]
