Польська класична література, від Г.Сенкевича й А.Міцкевича, сформувала в поляків образ «екзотичної Литви», де мешкали литовці-простаки: вони гірше одягалися, гірше воювали, однак любили свою «Батьківщину» – Польщу. У передвоєнні роки для поляків із Віленщини литовець був утіленням дикості та примітивізму, завжди асоціювався з селянством. «Поляк – це такий литовець, який ніколи у житті не пас гусей, а литовець – це такий поляк, котрий пас гусей, або ще пасе», – іронічно писав громадський діяч і публіцист І.Корвін-Мілевський.
