X. Benedictus, Giovanni olarak doğdu, 5 Nisan 1058'de IX. Stephanus'un halefi olarak seçildi, ancak II. Nicholaus'u seçen rakip bir hizip buna karşı çıktı. 24 Ocak 1059'da Roma'dan kaçtı ve bugün genellikle bir antipapa olarak kabul edilir.[1]
O zamanlar bölgedeki baskın siyasi hanedanın bir üyesi olan Tusculum Kontu III. Alberico'nun en küçük oğlu olan Poli Lordu Guido'nun oğluydu.[2] Giovanni, 1048'de tahttan indirilen kötü şöhretli Papa IX. Benedictus'un yeğeniydi.[3] X. Benedictus'a daha sonra bilgisizliği nedeniyle Mincius (zayıf) lakabı verildiği rivayet edilir.[4] Annesi, Nisan 1060'taki duruşmasında hazır bulundu.[5]
