Ang Sokoto ay isang lungsod na matatagpuan sa dulong hilagang-kanluran ng Nigeria, malapit sa tagpuan ng Ilog Sokoto at ng Ilog Rima. Sang-ayon sa seno ng 2006 mayroon itong populasyon na 427,760 katao. Ang Sokoto ay ang kasalukuyang kabisera ng Estado ng Sokoto (at ng nauna nitong Hilagang-Kanlurang Estado).
Ang pangalang Sokoto (bersiyong makabago o Anglisado ng pampook na pangalang Sakkwato) ay buhat ng Arabe, at kumakatawan sa suk, 'pamilihan'. Kilala rin ito bilang Sakkwato, Birnin Shaihu da Bello o "Sokoto, Kabisera ng Shaihu at Bello".
Bilang punong lungsod ng dating Kalipato ng Sokoto, isang lungsod na Muslim ang Sokoto at ang mahalagang sentro ng Islamikong pag-aaral sa Nigeria. Ang Sultan na namumuno sa kalipato ay siya ring espirituwal na pinuno ng mga Niheryanong Muslim.
