สำหรับในโลกตะวันตกก็มีการใช้ชื่อเล่นเช่นกัน โดยชื่อเล่นอาจจะเป็นชื่อย่อหรือคำย่อที่ย่อมาจากชื่อจริงชื่อนั้น หรือเป็นชื่อที่กร่อนเสียงหรือเพี้ยนบางพยางค์ไปจากชื่อจริง หรือบางทีชื่อเล่นก็นำมาจากฉายาที่เป็นคำสั้น ๆ ก็มี[1]
