Befolkningen var heterogen, såväl språkligt, religiöst som etniskt. Bland språk som talades märks jiddisch, polska[1] och tyska. I de västra landsdelarna var polackerna i majoritet medan rusinerna var i majoritet i den östra landsdelen.[3]
