Hypoplázia a aplázia hypofýzy patria do skupiny vrodených chýb podmozgovej žľazy. Hypoplázia je nedostatočné, neúplné vytvorenie hypofýzy počas vnútromaternicového vývoja jedinca; aplázia je úplné nevyvinutie tejto žľazy s vnútornou sekréciou. Pojmom aplázia sa môže v užšom slova zmysle označovať i úplné chýbanie niektorého z typov buniek hypofýzy. V literatúre je popisovaná i izolovaná aplázia predného laloka - adehohypofýzy.[1]
Oba typy sú zriedkavé a väčšinou sprevádzajú ťažké formy vrodených chýb (malformácií) mozgu, akými sú kyklopia a anencefália. Súčasne vznikajú poruchy vývoja endokrinných žliaz, ktoré sú riadené práve hypofýzou. Aplázia hypofýzy je takmer vždy smrteľná veľmi krátko po narodení, zväčša v dôsledku ťažkého vrodeného poškodenia mozgu a často i ostatných orgánov. Pri hypoplázii sa v dôsledku nedostatočnej tvorby hormónov hypofýzy klinicky prejavia rôzne ťažké stupne panhypopituitarizmu.
