Building a wall in Warsaw in 1940 to close in the ghetto.

The Nazi Ghettos were sections of cities where Jewish people were forced to live. They were set up by Nazi Germany before and during World War II. Jewish people had often been forced to live in ghettos in Europe, with the first one being set up in Venice in the 1500s. The Nazis wanted to keep the Jewish people separate from other people, which would make it easier to control them. Entry in and out of the ghetto was controlled. People were forced to live in the ghettos before they went to concentration camps. The areas were very overcrowded and dirty.
