අපෘෂ්ඨවංශීන් යනු කශේරුකාවක් රහිත සත්ත්වයන්ටය. සියලු සත්ත්ව විශේෂ වලින් 95% ක් ම මෙම කාණ්ඩයට අයත් වෙයි. එනම් කෝඩේටා වංශයෙහි උප වංශයක් වන වර්ටෙබ්රේටා වලට අයත් වන සතුන් (මත්ස්‍යයන්, උභයජීවීන්,උරගයන්, පක්ෂීන් හා ක්ෂීරපායින්) හැර අන් සියලුම සතුන්.අපෘෂ්ඨවංශීන් සියල්ලෝම පොදු පරිණාමි පූර්වජයෙකුගෙන් හෝ පූර්වජයන් කණ්ඩායමකින් පැවත ආවද එම පූර්වජයන් කාණ්ඩයෙන් පැවත එන සියලුම ජීවින් මෙම කාණ්ඩයට අයත් නොවෙති.( paraphyletic) පොදු පූර්වජයා බහු සෛලිය , යූකැරියෝටික ජීවියෙක් ලෙස ගත් කල කෝඩේටා වංශයේ උප වංශ ත්‍රිත්වයෙන් Urochordata හා Cephalochordata යන උප වංශ දෙක ද ඇතුළුව, අන්තර්ගත සියලුම වංශ අපෘෂ්ඨවංශීන් වෙති. These two, plus all the other known invertebrates, have only one cluster of Hox genes, while the vertebrates have duplicated their original cluster more than once.Within palaeozoology and palaeobiology, invertebrates are often studied within the fossil discipline called invertebrate palaeontology.

කාල් ලිනෙයස් විසින් මෙම ජීවින් වෙන් කරන ලද්දේ කණ්ඩායම් දෙකකට පමණි. එනම් ඉන්සෙක්ටා(කෘමින්) හා දැනට අවශිෂ්ට පණුවන්(vermes) ලෙසය. 1973 දී Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle හි "Curator of Insecta and Vermes" තනතුරට පත් කරනු ලැබූ ජාන් බැප්ටිස්ට් ලැමාර්ක් විසින් මෙම ජීවින් විස්තර කිරීමට "අපෘෂ්ඨවංශීන්" යන යෙදුම ඉදිරිපත් කරන ලදී. තවදුරටත් ඔහු විසින් මූලික වශයෙන් බෙදා තිබූ කාණ්ඩ දෙක , කාණ්ඩ දහයක් දක්වා බෙදන ලදී. එනම් ලිනේයස්ගේ ඉන්සෙක්ටා කාණ්ඩයෙන් ඇරැක්නීඩා හා ක්‍රස්ටේශියා ද ලිනේයස්ගේ vermes කාණ්ඩයෙන් මොලුස්කා, ඇනෙලිඩා, Cirripedia, රේඩියාටා, සීලන්ට්‍රේටා හා Infusoria ද විභේදනය කරන ලදී. වර්තමානයේදී මොවුන් මුහුදු ස්පොන්ජින්, පැතලි පණුවන් වැනි සරල ජීවින්ගේ සිට ආත්‍රෝපෝඩා, මොලුස්කා වැනි සංකීර්ණ ජීවින් දක්වා වංශ 30 කට අධික සංක්‍යාවකට වර්ගීකරණය කර ඇත.
