Veštački radioaktivni izotopi su radioaktivni izotopi koji se ne javljaju u prirodnim uslovima na Zemlji.
Najčešće se dobijaju bombardovanjem atomskih jezgara elementarnim česticama ili drugim atomskim jezgrima i raspadom ili cepanjem tako dobijenih jezgara.
Veštački radioaktivni izotopi mogu biti veoma kratkog veka (manje od jedne sekunde) a mogu biti i dugoživeći, do nekoliko stotina godina. Kratkoživeći izotopi imaju izvanredno veliku primenu. Nukearna medicina najvećim delom se bavi primenom kratkoživećih radioaktivnih izotopa u lečenju i dijagnostici. Recimo pozitron emisiona tomografija koristi izotope ugljenika 11-C (~20 min), azota 13-N (~10 min), kiseonika 15-O (~2 min) i fluora 18-F (~110 min).

Dugoživeći radioaktivni izotopi nastali sagorevanjem nukearnog goriva u atomskim cetralama predstavljaju najveći problem u skladištenju istrošenog nuklearnog goriva.
