Srednji mitraljez (engleski medium machine gun, MMG) je naziv za mitraljez koji je lakši od teškog mitraljeza te može obavljati zadatke predviđene za puškomitraljez, ali ga zbog veće težine moraju posluživati dva člana posade, odnosno može obavljati određene zadatke koji se vezuju uz teški mitraljez. Uz izraz srednji mitraljez se često vezuje i koncept tzv. mitraljeza opće namjene.

Jedan od prvih modela srednjeg mitraljeza koji je bio dizajniran kao takav bio je njemački MG34.
