Formaldehid ili metanal (HCHO) je gasovito jedinjenje rastvorljivo u vodi i najjednostavniji aldehid.[2] Obično se čuva rastvoren u vodi pod nazivom formalin (37% formaldehida i oko 15% metanola u vodi)[3], ili u obliku čvrstog polimera - paraformaldehida (paraform). Najčešće se primenjuje u industriji plastičnih masa,[4] bakelita i kože i kao dezinfekciono sredstvo.
