Джозеф Гербер родился 17 апреля 1924 года в семье венских евреев. Он пережил Холокост и в 1940 году иммигрировал в США, а его отец Холокост не пережил. В 1946 году основал компанию Gerber Scientific по производству придуманных им масштабируемых логарифмических линеек. В 1994 году Джозеф Гербер получил американскую национальную медаль технологии, самое высокое признание в области технологий и инноваций.

Скончался 8 августа 1996 года в Хартфорде.
