ଡାଉନ ସିଣ୍ଡ୍ରୋମ (ଡିଏସ୍ ବା ଡିଏନଏସ), ଅନ୍ୟ ନାମ ଟ୍ରାଇସୋମି ୨୧, ଏକ ଜେନେଟିକ ବେମାରୀ ଯେଉଁଥିରେ କ୍ରୋମୋଜୋମ ୨୧ ତୃତୀୟ କପିର ସମସ୍ତ ବା ଆଂଶିକ ଉପସ୍ଥିତିଦ୍ୱାରା ହୁଏ ।[୧] ଏହାଦ୍ୱାରା ଶାରୀରିକ ବୃଦ୍ଧି ବିଳମ୍ବ ହୁଏ, ସ୍ୱାଭାବିକ ମୁଖ ଆକୃତି ଓ ସାମାନ୍ୟରୁ ମଧ୍ୟମ ବୁଦ୍ଧିମତ୍ତା ବିକଳାଙ୍ଗ ଦେଖାଯାଏ ।[୨] ଡାଉନ ସିଣ୍ଡ୍ରୋମ ଥିବା ଯୁବ ବୟସ୍କର ଆଇକ୍ୟୁ ୫୦ ଥାଏ ଯାହା ୮ରୁ ୯ ବର୍ଷିୟ ପିଲାର ମାନସିକ ବୟସ ସଙ୍ଗେ ସମାନ । [୩]
ଡାଉନ ସିଣ୍ଡ୍ରୋମ ରୋଗୀର ପିତାମାତା ସ୍ୱାଭାବିକ ଭାବରେ ଜେନେଟିକାଲି ସାଧାରଣ ଥାଆନ୍ତି ।[୪] ଅତିରିକ୍ତ କ୍ରୋମୋଜୋମଟି ଘଟଣାକ୍ରମେ (by chance) ତିଆରି ହୁଏ ।[୫] ଅନ୍ୟ କୌଣସି ବ୍ୟବହାରିକ ବା ପରିବେଶଗତ ସଙ୍କଟ ଏହି ପରିବର୍ତ୍ତନ ଆଣିବା ଜଣାଯାଇ ନାହିଁ ।[୫] ଗର୍ଭାବସ୍ଥାରେ ବି ଏହି ରୋଗ ପିତାମାତାଙ୍କ ସ୍କ୍ରୀନିଙ୍ଗ, ନିର୍ଣ୍ଣୟାତ୍ମକ ପରୀକ୍ଷା ବା ଶିଶୁ ଜନ୍ମ ପରେ ଜେନେଟିକ ପରୀକ୍ଷା ଓ ଅବଲୋକନ କରି ଚିହ୍ନଟ କରାଯାଇପାରେ ।[୬] ସ୍କ୍ରୀନିଙ୍ଗ ଲାଗୁ ହେବା ପରଠାରୁ ଗର୍ଭାବସ୍ଥାରେ ଏହି ରୋଗ ନିର୍ଣ୍ଣୟ ହେଲେ ଗର୍ଭପାତ କରିଦିଆଯାଉଛି ।[୭][୮] ଏହି ରୋଗରେ ନିୟମିତ ସ୍ୱାସ୍ଥ୍ୟ ସମସ୍ୟା ଲାଗି ରହୁଥିବାରୁ ସାରା ଜୀବନ ରୋଗୀର ମେଡିକାଲ ପରୀକ୍ଷା କରିବାକୁ ପଡ଼େ ।[୩]
ଡାଉନ ସିଣ୍ଡ୍ରୋମ ରୋଗ ଆରୋଗ୍ୟ ହୁଏନାହିଁ ।[୯] ଉପଯୁକ୍ତ ଶିକ୍ଷା ଓ ଯତ୍ନ ସାହାଯ୍ୟରେ ଜୀବନ ଗୁଣବତ୍ତା ଉନ୍ନତ ହୁଏ ।[୧୦] ଏହି ରୋଗଗ୍ରସ୍ତ କେତେକ ପିଲା ସ୍ୱାଭାବିକ ବିଦ୍ୟାଳୟରେ ଶିକ୍ଷାଲାଭ କରୁଥିଲେ ମଧ୍ୟ ଅନ୍ୟ କେତେକ ବିଶେଷ ବିଦ୍ୟାଳୟ ଆବଶ୍ୟକ କରନ୍ତି ।[୧୧] ଏହିପରି କେତେକ ପିଲା ହାଇସ୍କୁଲ ପାସ୍ ଓ ଅନ୍ୟ କେତେକ ପରବର୍ତ୍ତୀ ଶିକ୍ଷା (post-secondary education) ଲାଭ କରିପାରିଥିବା ଜଣାଯାଏ ।[୧୨] ଯୁକ୍ତରାଷ୍ଟ୍ର ଆମେରିକାରେ ବୟଃପ୍ରାପ୍ତ ଏହି ରୋଗୀଙ୍କ ମଧ୍ୟରୁ କେତେକ ଲୋକ ଦରମାପ୍ରାପ୍ତ କାମ କରିବା ଜଣାଯାଏ[୧୩] ଓ ଅନ୍ୟ କେତେକ ଅଧୀନସ୍ଥ ପର୍ଯ୍ୟବେକ୍ଷଣ ଲବ୍ଧ କାମ କରନ୍ତି ।[୧୧] ଏମାନଙ୍କର ଅର୍ଥନୈତିକ ଓ ନ୍ୟାୟିକ ସାହାଯ୍ୟ ଅଧିକାଂଶ ସମୟରେ ଆବଶ୍ୟକ ହୁଏ ।[୧୪] ଉପଯୁକ୍ତ ସ୍ୱାସ୍ଥ୍ୟ ଯତ୍ନ ନେଲେ ବିକଶିତ ଦେଶମାନଙ୍କରେ ଏମାନଙ୍କର ଆୟୁଷ ୫୦ ବର୍ଷ ପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ ହୋଇପାରେ ।[୩][୧୪]
ଡାଉନ ସିଣ୍ଡ୍ରୋମ ମାନବର ଅସାଧାରଣ କ୍ରୋମୋଜୋମ ରୋଗ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ସବୁଠାରୁ ସାଧାରଣ ରୋଗ ।[୩] ପ୍ରତିବର୍ଷ ଜନ୍ମ ହେଉଥିବା ୧୦୦୦ ଶିଶୁଙ୍କ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ପ୍ରାୟ ଜଣକୁ ଏହି ରୋଗ ହୋଇଥାଏ ।[୨] ସନ ୧୯୯୦ରେ ଏହି ରୋଗ ଯୋଗୁ ୪୩,୦୦୦ ମୃତ୍ୟୁ ହୋଇଥିବା ବେଳେ ସନ ୨୦୧୩ରେ ୮.୫ ନିୟୁତ ଡାଉନ ସିଣ୍ଡ୍ରୋମ ରୋଗୀଙ୍କ ମଧ୍ୟରୁ ୩୬,୦୦୦ମୃତ୍ୟୁ ହୋଇଥିଲା ।[୧୫][୧୬] ସନ ୧୮୬୬ରେ ଏହି ରୋଗର ବିଶଦ ବିବରଣୀ ଲେଖିଥିବା ବ୍ରିଟିଶ ଡାକ୍ତର ଜନ୍ ଲାଙ୍ଗଡନ ଡାଉନଙ୍କ ନାମାନୁସାରେ ଏହି ରୋଗର ନାମକରଣ କରାଯାଇଛି ।[୧୭] ଏହି ରୋଗର କେତେକ ଦିଗ ଉପରେ ସନ ୧୮୩୮ରେ ଜିନ-ଏଟିଏନ ଏସକୁଇରୋ (Jean-Étienne Dominique Esquirol) ଓ ସନ ୧୯୪୪ରେ ଏଡୱାର୍ଡ ସେଗୁଇନ (Édouard Séguin) ଆଲୋକପାତ କରିଥିଲେ ।[୧୮] ଏଥିରେ ରୋଗୀର ଏକ ଅତିରିକ୍ତ କ୍ରୋମୋଜୋମ ୨୧ ଥିବା କଥା ଫରାସୀ ଗବେଷକମାନେ ସନ ୧୯୫୯ରେ ଚିହ୍ନଟ କରିଥିଲେ ।[୧୭]
