Sammensatt DNA-transposon

Transposoner (eller "hoppende gener") er biter av DNA som kan flytte seg til nye steder i genomet i en celle. Flyttingen kan enten skje i form av "kopier-og-lim-inn" eller "klipp-og-lim-inn". Transposoner kan føre til mutasjoner med betydelig fenotypiske effekt og de kan endre cellas genomstørrelse. Oppdagelsen av disse "hoppende genene" i 1950[1] ga Barbara McClintock Nobelprisen i fysiologi eller medisin i 1983. McClintock er fortsatt (2010) den eneste kvinnelige ene-mottaker av denne nobelprisen.

Transposoner kan utgjøre en stor del av genomets størrelse i eukaryote celler og er en del av ikke-kodende DNA. Transposoner innebærer viktige metoder for å endre DNA i levende organismer.
