Simurgh (سيمرغ, også Simurg, Simorg eller Senmurv på mellompersisk) er et fabelvesen i persisk mytologi. Denne mytiske fuglen er også kjent blant de tyrkiske folkeslag i Sentral-Asia og hos basjkirene, og kalles blant dem Kerkés, Semrug, Semurg, Samran eller Samruk.[1][2]

Etymologi

Etymologien er omstridt. Én mulighet går tilbake til akkadisk Sūmurukū (rød glødende ramme) og viser til rød som symbolfarge for sør, og at det dreier seg om den samme som også er blitt den mytiske kinesiske «Sydens røde fugl». En annen mulighet er at navnet kommer fra avestisk mərəγō Saēnō («fuglen Saena»).
