Countdown to Extinction er Megadeths femte studioalbum. Dave Mustaine hadde lenge vært i bitter strid med Metallica, og Megadeth klarte aldri toppe Metallica sine album. Albumet Metallica, også kjent som The Black Album kom i 1991 og solgte mer enn noen andre Metallica-album tidligere hadde gjort. Dave Mustaine ønsket å legge om stilen for å oppnå den samme suksessen som Metallica, det resulterte med Countdown to Extinction. Albumet er ifølge Dave Mustaine selv det beste albumet Megadeth noen gang har gitt ut.
