Pilammunisjon i bruk: Høghastigheitsbilete av prosjektilhylse som skrellast av prosjektilet i flukt

Pilammunisjon består av ein penetrator med mindre kaliber enn løpet, og eit prosjektilhylster kalla sabot rundt denne. Penetratoren består av eit svært hardt og tungt stoff, vanlegvis utarma uran eller wolframkarbid, og er spiss og stabilisert i flukt av finnar. Pilammunisjon vert omtalt som regel som kinetisk ammunisjon eller APFSDS, eit akronym for Armour-Piercing, Fin-stabilised, Discarding Sabot.[1]
