Grev Maurice Polydore Marie Bernard Maeterlinck (fødd 29. august 1862 i Gent, død 6. mai 1949 i Nice) var ein belgisk franskspråkleg poet, dramatikar og essayist som i 1911 blei tildelt Nobelprisen i litteratur «på grund av hans mångsidiga litterära verksamhet och särskilt hans dramatiska skapelser, som utmärka sig genom fantasirikedom och genom en poetisk idealitet, vilken, stundom i sagospelets slöjade form, röjer djup inlevelse samt på ett hemlighetsfullt sätt tilltalar läsarens känsla och aning.»[1][2]

Maeterlinck sin lyrikk og sceneverk gjer han til ein av dei viktigaste representantane for symbolismen i litteraturen. Eit sentralt tema i mange av desse verka er menneska si hjelpeløyse stilt ovanfor døden.
