[sunting | sunting sumber]Judi lahir di Heworth, North Riding of Yorkshire. Ibunya Eleanora Olive (nama keluarga asal: Jones), kelahiran Dublin, Ireland manakala ayahnya Reginald Arthur Dench merupakan seorang doktor kelahiran Dorset, England yang kemudiannya berpindah ke Dublin dan dibesarkan di sana.[2]
Beliau menghadiri Mount School]], sebuah sekolah menengah milik Persatuan Quaker di York.[3][4]
