ന്യൂയോർക്കിലെ യുട്ടികയിൽ റിച്ചാർഡ് അപ്ഡിക് ഷെർമാൻറെയും മേരി ഫ്രാൻസെസ് ഷെർമാൻറെയും മകനായി ജനിച്ചു.
