ഡ്രംസ്
കൊട്ടുവാൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന പലതരം പാശ്ചാത്യ താള വാദ്യോപകരണങ്ങൾ ഒരാൾക്ക് ഒറ്റയ്ക്ക് ഒരുമിച്ച് വായിക്കുവാൻ ചേർത്ത് വച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന കൂട്ടത്തെ ഡ്രംസ് അല്ലെങ്കിൽ 'ഡ്രം സെറ്റ്' എന്ന് പറയുന്നു. ഇതിൽ പഴയകാലത്ത് ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്ന മരക്കട്ടകൾ, തുകൽ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഫൈബർ കൊണ്ട് ഉണ്ടാക്കിയ പലതരം ഡ്രംമുകളും, പശുവിന്റെ കഴുത്തിൽ പണ്ട് കാലത്ത് കെട്ടിയിരുന്ന മണി (കൌ ബെൽ), ട്രയാഗിൾസ് എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ത്രികോനാക്രിതിയിലുള്ള കമ്പി ഫ്രൈമുകൾ, കിലുക്കാൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ടാംബോറിൻ, പലതരം മണികൾ എന്നിവയുണ്ടാവും.
ഒരു ഡ്രം സെറ്റിന്റെ പ്രധാന ഭാഗങ്ങൾ കാലുകൾ കൊണ്ട് വായിക്കുന്ന 'ബേസ് ഡ്രം', 'ഹൈ ഹാറ്റ്' മുതലായവയും, കൈകൾ കൊണ്ട് വായിക്കുന്ന 'സ്നേർ ഡ്രം', 'ടോം ടോം', 'ഫ്ലോർ ടോം', 'സിംബൽസ്' എന്നിവയും ആയിരിക്കും. ഇവ വായിക്കുന്നത് കാലുകളിൽ പെടലും, കൈകളിൽ വടികളോ (stick ), ബ്രഷോ(brush )ഉപയോഗിച്ചായിരിക്കും ആയിരിക്കും. വിവിധ സംഗീത രീതികൾക്കും വിവിധ രീതിയിലാണ് ഡ്രംസ് വായിക്കുന്നത്. ഉദാഹരണത്തിന്: റോക്ക് മുസിക് ആണെങ്കിൽ 'ബേസ് ദ്രമും', 'സ്നേർ ദ്രമും', 'ഹൈ ഹാറ്റ്'ഉം ആണ് പ്രധാനം. എന്നാൽ ജാസിൽ 'റൈഡ് സിംബലും', സ്നേർ ഡ്രം' ന്റെ ചില ശൈലികളുമാണ് പ്രധാനം.
'ഡ്രം സെറ്റ്' എന്നുള്ള വാക്ക് 1890 കളിൽ ബ്രിട്ടനിലാണ് ആദ്യമായി ഉപയോഗിച്ചത്. അതിനെ തന്നെ 'ഡ്രം കിറ്റ്', 'ട്രാപ് സെറ്റ്', ഡ്രംസ് എന്ന് പല പേരുകളിൽ വിളിക്കും. ഇവ എല്ലാം ആദ്യ കാലങ്ങളിൽ വേറെ വേറെ ആയിരുന്നു വായിച്ചിരുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ ഒര്കെസ്ട്രകളിൽ സാമ്പത്തികമായുള്ള ലാഭത്തിനു വേണ്ടി ആളുകളുടെ എണ്ണം കുറയ്ക്കാനായി ഒരാൾ തന്നെ കൂടുതൽ ഡ്രംമ്മുകൾ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുവാൻ തുടങ്ങി. 1890 ലാണ് കാലുകൾ കൊണ്ടുള്ള പെടൽ പരീക്ഷണം നടത്തിത്തുടങ്ങിയത്. 1909 മുതൽ ബേസ്ഡ്രം നിലവിൽ വരുകയും ആധുനിക 'ഡ്രം കിറ്റിനു' രൂപം കൊടുക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. 1940 ലാണ് രണ്ട് ഡ്രംമ്മുകൾ കാലുകളിൽ വച്ച് വായന തുടങ്ങിയത്. പിന്നീട് ഇലക്ട്രോണിക് ഡ്രംമ്മുകളും, ഡ്രം മഷീനുകളും നിലവിൽ വന്നു. ഡ്രം വായിക്കുന്ന ആളെ ഡ്രമ്മർ(drummer ) എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നു.
പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ചില ഡ്രമ്മർമാർ ബില്ലി കോബാം, കാൾ പാമർ, കീത്ത് മൂൺ, ജോൺ ബോണാം, റിന്ഗോ സ്റ്റാർ, ഫിൽ കോളിൻസ്, നിക്കോ മക് ബ്രെയിൻ തുടങ്ങിയവരാണ്. ഇന്ന് ലോകത്തിന്റെ എല്ലാ ഭാഗങ്ങളിലും പല സംഗീത രീതികളിലും ഡ്രം കിറ്റ് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.
