ഒരു സംസ്കാരത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും ആധുനികമായ ലോഹസംസ്കരണം വെങ്കലം ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്ന കാലഘട്ടത്തിനെ ആ സംസ്കാരത്തിന്റെ വെങ്കല യുഗം എന്ന് പറയുന്നു. ചരിത്രാതീതകാലഘട്ടങ്ങളിൽ ശിലായുഗത്തിനും അയോയുഗത്തിനുമിടയിലുള്ള കാലഘട്ടമാണിത്. ഇന്ത്യൻ ഉപഭൂഖണ്ഡത്തിലെ വെങ്കലയുഗം ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത് ഏകദേശം ക്രി.മു 3300- ഓടെ സിന്ധൂ നദീതട സംസ്കാരത്തിൽ ആണ്.[1] പുരാതന സിന്ധൂ നദീതടത്തിലെ താമസക്കാരായ ഹാരപ്പർ ലോഹനിർമ്മിതിയിൽ പുതിയ വിദ്യകൾ വികസിപ്പിച്ച് ചെമ്പ്, വെങ്കലം, ഈയം, തകരം (ടിൻ) എന്നിവ നിർമ്മിച്ചു.
മെസപ്പൊട്ടേമിയയിൽ വെങ്കലയുഗം ആരംഭിച്ചത് ഏകദേശം 2900 ബി. സിയോടെ ഉറുക് കാലഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ അവസാനമായാണ്. ആദ്യ സുമേരിയൻ, അക്കാദിയൻ, ആദ്യ ബാബിലോണിയൻ, ആദ്യ അസ്സീറിയൻ എന്നീ കാലഘട്ടങ്ങൾ മെസപ്പൊട്ടേമിയയിലെ വെങ്കലയുഗത്തിൽ ആയിരുന്നു.
