ലീപ്സിഗ് (ലൈപ്തിശ് എന്നു ഉച്ചരിക്കുന്നു) ജർമ്മനിയിലെ സാക്സോണി സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ പട്ടണമാണ്. ഇവിടെ 544,479 പ്രദേശവാസികളുണ്ട്.[4] ജർമ്മനിയിലെ കൂടുതൽ ജനസംഖ്യയുള്ള 15 വലിയ പട്ടണങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണിത്. ബെർലിൻ നഗരത്തിന്റെ തെക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറാായി ആ നഗരത്തിൽനിന്നും 160 കി. മീ. അകലെ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. വൈറ്റ് ഏൾസ്റ്റർ, പ്ലെഇസ്സീ, പാർഥേ എന്നീ നദികളുടെ സങമസ്ഥാനത്തു ഉത്തര ജർമ്മൻ പീഠഭൂമിയുടെ തെക്കേഅറ്റത്തായി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു.
ലിപ്സിഗ് കുറഞ്ഞത് വിശുദ്ധ റോമാസാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ കാലത്തുതൊട്ടേ ഒരു വാണിജ്യ പട്ടണമായി നിലനിന്നുവരുന്നു. [5]അന്നത്തെ മദ്ധ്യകാലത്തെ പ്രധാന വാണിജ്യപാതകളായ, വിയ റീജിയ, വിയ ഇമ്പെറൈ എന്നിവയുടെ സംഗമസ്ഥാനത്താണിതു നിൽക്കുന്നത്. ലിപ്സിഗ് അന്ന് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിന്റെയും സംസ്കാരത്തിന്റെയും സംഗീതത്തിന്റെയും പ്രസാധനത്തിന്റെയും കേന്ദ്രമായിരുന്നു. ലീപ്സിഗ് രണ്ടാം ലോകമഹായുദ്ധത്തിനു ശേഷം ജർമൻ ജനാധിപത്യ റിപ്പബ്ലിക്കിന്റെ കാലത്ത് (കിഴക്കൻ ജർമ്മനി) പ്രധാന നഗരകേന്ദ്രമായിരുന്നു.

ലീപ്സിഗ് സ്ലാവിക് വാക്കായ ലിപ്സ്ക് എന്നതിൽനിന്നുണ്ടായതാണ്. ലിൻഡെൻ മരങ്ങൾ നിൽക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലത്തുള്ള വാസസ്ഥലം എന്നാണിതിനർഥം. ലാറ്റിനിൽ ലിപ്സിയ എന്നും പറയാറുണ്ട്.
1937ൽ നാസി സർക്കാർ ഈ നഗരത്തെ Reichsmessestadt Leipzig (Imperial Trade Fair City Leipzig) എന്നു പുനർനാമകരണം ചെയ്തു.
