2008 മുംബൈ ഭീകരാക്രമണത്തിൽ മരണപ്പെട്ട എൻ.എസ്.ജി കമാൻഡോ ആയിരുന്നു ഗജേന്ദർ സിങ് ബിഷ്ത് (1972 ജൂലൈ 1 - 2008 നവംബർ 28).^[1] 2009 ജനുവരി 26 ന് ഇന്ത്യയുടെ രാഷ്ട്രപതി അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻെറ ധീരതയ്ക്കുള്ള ബഹുമതിയായി അശോക് ചക്ര അവാർഡ് നൽകി ആദരിച്ചു.^[2][3]

ഉത്തരാഖണ്ഡിലെ ഗണേശ്പുർ സ്വദേശിയായ ഗജേന്ദർ സിങ്, നയാ ഗാവിലെ ജനാത ഇന്റർ കോളേജിൽ പഠിച്ചു. സ്കൂളിൽ പഠിച്ചിരുന്ന കാലത്ത് എല്ലാ പരിപാടികളിലും പങ്കെടുത്തിട്ടുള്ള ഒരു അച്ചടക്കമുള്ള വിദ്യാർത്ഥിയെന്ന നിലയിൽ ഗജേന്ദർ സിങ്ങിനെ കർ ഓർമിക്കുന്നു. ബോക്സിങിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് പ്രത്യേക താത്പര്യമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.^[4]

ദേശീയ സുരക്ഷാ ഗാർഡിലെ 51 സ്പെഷ്യൽ ആക്ഷൻ ഗ്രൂപ്പിലെ അംഗമായിരുന്നു ഗജേന്ദർ. 2008-ൽ ഭീകരവാദികൾ മുംബൈ ആക്രമിച്ചപ്പോൾ ബന്ദികളാക്കിയവരെ രക്ഷിക്കാൻ നിയോഗിച്ച ദേശീയ സുരക്ഷാസേനയിൽ നരിമാൻ ഹൗസിന്റെ മേൽക്കൂരയിൽ അതിവേഗത്തിൽ കയറിയ സേനയുടെ സംഘത്തിലെ അംഗമായിരുന്നു ഗജേന്ദർ. തീവ്രവാദികൾ നിലയുറപ്പിച്ച താജ് ഹോട്ടലിലേക്ക് കമാൻഡോകൾ നടത്തിയ പ്രത്യാക്രമണം ഓപ്പറേഷൻ ബ്ലാക്ക് ടൊർണാഡോ എന്നായിരുന്നു അറിയപ്പെട്ടത്.^[5]

ഓപ്പറേഷൻ ബ്ലാക്ക് ടൊർണാഡോയുടെ സമയത്ത് നരിമാൻ ഹൌസ് സുരക്ഷിതമാകുമ്പോൾ തീവ്രവാദികൾ ജൂത കേന്ദ്രത്തെ ആക്രമിച്ച സമയത്ത് ഗജേന്ദർ സിങിന് മുറിവേൽക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. മരണം സംഭവിച്ചത് ടിവി ചാനലുകൾ തൽസമയ പ്രവർത്തനം പ്രക്ഷേപണം ചെയ്‌ത് ഭീകകർക് മുന്നറിയിപ്പ് നൽകിയതാണ് കാരണം എന്ന് സൈന്യം പറയുന്നു.

In the night of 27th November 2008, Havildar Gajender Singh was leading his squad in the operation to rescue hostages from the terrorists at Nariman House, Mumbai.

After clearing the top floor of the terrorists, he reached the place where the terrorists had taken position. As he closed in, the terrorists hurled a grenade injuring him. Undeterred, he kept firing and closing in on the terrorists by exposing himself to the hostile fire. In the act, he injured one of the terrorists and forced the others to retreat inside a room. He continued the encounter till he succumbed to his injuries.

Havildar Gajender Singh displayed most conspicuous courage against grave odds and made the supreme sacrifice for the nation in combating the terrorists.^[6]
