ഇസ്‌ലാമിക ഭരണകൂടങ്ങൾ കൃഷിഭൂമിക്കോ വിളകൾക്കോ ചുമത്തിയിരുന്ന നികുതിയാണ് ഖറാജ് ( അറബി: خراج‬ ) ^[1]. ആദ്യകാലത്ത് കീഴടക്കപ്പെട്ട പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും ഭൂമിയിൽ നിന്നും ഈടാക്കിയ തീരുവയായിരുന്നു ഖറാജ് എന്നതുകൊണ്ട് വിവക്ഷിക്കപ്പെട്ടതെങ്കിലും, പിന്നീടത് ദിമ്മികളിൽ നിന്നും ഈടാക്കുന്ന ഭൂനികുതിയായി പരിണമിച്ചു. പലപ്പോഴും ജിസ്‌യ എന്നതിന്റെ പര്യായമായി ഖറാജ് ഉപയോഗിക്കപ്പെട്ടെങ്കിലും അവ തമ്മിൽ വലിയ വ്യത്യാസങ്ങൾ നിലനിന്നു. അബ്ബാസികളുടെ കാലത്ത് മതഭേദമന്യേ എല്ലാവർക്കും ബാധകമായ ഒന്നായി ഖറാജ് മാറി.^[2] എല്ലാത്തരം നികുതികളും വിവരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു പൊതുവായ പദമായും ഖറാജ് ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നു: ഉദാഹരണത്തിന്, ഒൻപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ ജൂറിസ്റ്റ് അബു യൂസഫിന്റെ നികുതി സംബന്ധിച്ച ക്ലാസിക് ഗ്രന്ഥത്തെ കിതാബ് അൽ ഖറാജ് എന്നാണ് വിളിച്ചിരുന്നത്, അതായത് നികുതി സംബന്ധിച്ച പുസ്തകം . ^[3]
