സ്വതന്ത്രവും തുറന്ന മാനദണ്ഡത്തോടെയുമുള്ള കണ്ടെയ്നർ ഫോർമാറ്റാണ് ഓഗ്. Xiph.Org (ഉച്ചാരണം: ziff.org) ഫൗണ്ടേഷനാണ് ഇതിനെ പരിപാലിക്കുന്നത്. ഇത് ഏതെങ്കിലും പേറ്റന്റ് വഴി നിയന്ത്രിക്കപ്പെട്ടതല്ലെന്നും,[3] ഉയർന്ന ഗുണമേന്മയുള്ള ഡിജിറ്റൽ മൾട്ടിമീഡിയയുടെ കാര്യക്ഷമതയോടെയുള്ള സ്ട്രീമിങ്ങിനു വേണ്ടി സൃഷ്ടിക്കപ്പെട്ടതാണ് ഇതെന്നും ഇതിന്റെ നിർമ്മാതക്കൾ അവകാശപ്പെടുന്നു. കമ്പ്യൂട്ടർ ഗെയിമായ നെട്രെക്കിൽ നിന്നുള്ള "ഓഗിംഗ്" എന്ന പദപ്രയോഗത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഇതിന്റെ പേര് ഉരുത്തിരിഞ്ഞത്. വ്യത്യസ്ത സ്വതന്ത്ര/ഓപ്പൺ സോഴ്സ് ഓഡിയോ, വീഡിയോ, ടെക്സ്റ്റ്, മെറ്റാഡേറ്റ കോഡെക്കുകളെ ഒരുമിച്ചു ചേർത്തുള്ള ഫയൽ ഫോർമാറ്റിനെ "ഓഗ്" എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നു.
ഓഗ് മൾട്ടിമീഡിയ ഫ്രെയിംവർക്കിൽ വീഡിയോകൾക്ക് തിയോറ (Theora) ഉപയോഗിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു, സംഗീതങ്ങൾക്കനുയോജ്യമായ വോർബിസ് ആണ് കൂടുതലും ഓഡിയോകൾക്ക് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്. മനുഷ്യ സംഭാഷണങ്ങളെ കമ്പ്രസ്സ് ചെയ്യുന്ന കൊഡെക്കായ സ്പീക്സ് (Speex), നഷ്ടരഹിത ഓഡിയോ കോഡെക്കായ ഫ്ലാക്ക് (FLAC), OggPCM തുടങ്ങിയവയും ഓഡിയോകൾക്ക് ഉപയോഗിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇന്റെർനെറ്റ് എൻജിനീയറിങ് ടാസ്ക് ഫോഴ്സിന്റെ ഓഡിയോ സ്റ്റാൻഡേർഡ് ആയ ഓപ്പസും ഓഗ് കണ്ടെയ്നർ ഫോർമാറ്റാണ് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്.
2007-ന് മുമ്പ്, ഓഗ് കണ്ടെയ്നർ ഫോർമാറ്റ് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന എല്ലാ ഫയലുകൾക്കും .ogg ഫയൽനാമം വിപുലീകരണം ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നു. 2007 മുതൽ, ഓഗ് വോർബിസ് ഓഡിയോ ഫയലുകൾക്കായി മാത്രം .ogg ഉപയോഗിക്കണമെന്ന് Xiph.Org ഫൗണ്ടേഷൻ ശുപാർശ ചെയ്യുന്നു. Xiph.Org ഫൗണ്ടേഷൻ, ഓഡിയോ മാത്രമുള്ള ഫയലുകൾക്കുള്ള .oga, ശബ്‌ദമുള്ളതോ ഇല്ലാത്തതോ ആയ വീഡിയോയ്‌ക്കുള്ള .ogv (തിയോറ ഉൾപ്പെടെ), മൾട്ടിപ്ലക്‌സ്ഡ് ഓഗ് ചെയ്‌തവയ്‌ക്കായി .ogx എന്നിങ്ങനെയുള്ള വ്യത്യസ്ത തരം ഉള്ളടക്കങ്ങളെ വിവരിക്കുന്നതിന് പുതിയൊരു കൂട്ടം ഫയൽ എക്സ്റ്റക്ഷനുകളും, മീഡിയ ടൈപ്പുകളും സൃഷ്‌ടിക്കാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു.[5]
