എഡ്വേർഡ് ഡബിൾഡേ (ജീവിതകാലം: 9 ഒക്ടോബർ 1810 – 14 ഡിസംബർ 1849) ശലഭങ്ങളിൽ താല്പര്യമുള്ള ഒരു ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പ്രാണിപഠനശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായിരുന്നു. William Chapman Hewitson-ന്റെ ചിത്രങ്ങൾ സഹിതം John O. Westwood-ഓടോപ്പംചേർന്നെഴുതിയ The Genera of Diurnal Lepidoptera: Comprising Their Generic Characters, a Notice of Their Habits and Transformations, and a Catalogue of the Species of Each Genus -ന്റെയും List of the Specimens of Lepidopterous Insects in the Collection of the British Museum -ന്റെയും പേരിലാണ് അദ്ദേഹം ഏറ്റവും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്..
അദ്ദേഹം 9 ഒക്ടോബർ 1810-ൽ ബെഞ്ചമിൻ-മേരി ദമ്പതികളുടെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ മകനായി Epping, Essex-ൽ ജനിച്ചു.മൂത്ത സഹോദരൻ Henry Doubleday -ഉം ഒരു പ്രാണിപഠനശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായിരുന്നു. രണ്ടുപേരും ചെറുപ്പം മുതലേ പ്രകൃതിതല്പരരും അടുത്തുള്ള വനത്തിനിന്നും പ്രാണികളെ ശേഖരിക്കുന്നവരുമായിരുന്നു.Quakers സമുദായത്തിൽ വളർന്ന അവർക്ക് അടുത്തുള്ള Quaker സ്കൂളിൽനിന്നും നല്ല വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം ലഭിച്ചു.[1]
1835-ൽ അദ്ദേഹം Robert Foster-യോടൊപ്പം അമേരിക്ക സന്ദർശിക്കുകയും അവിടെവച്ചു "Communications on the Natural History of North America" എന്നപേരിൽ ലണ്ടൻ Entomological Magazine-ൽ ഒരു ലേഖനപരമ്പര പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. അവർ രണ്ടുപേരും അധികസമയം ന്യൂയോർക്കിൽ ചെലവഴിക്കുകയും ശാസ്ത്രത്തിന് അതുവരെ അജ്ഞാതമായിരുന്ന അരഡസൻ Stoneflies ഉൾപ്പെടെ ധാരാളം പ്രാണികളെ ശേഖരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. Edward Newman ആണ് അവയെ വിവരിച്ചത്.[2] അദ്ദേഹം രണ്ടുവർഷം അമേരിക്കയിൽ തങ്ങുകയും ധാരാളം പ്രാണികളെ ശേഖരിച്ചു British Museum ഉൾപ്പെടെ ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിലുള്ള പല സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളിലേക്കും അയക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.[3]
തിരികെ ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിലെത്തിയ അദ്ദേഹം ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് മ്യൂസിയത്തിൽ ജോലിയിൽ പ്രവേശിക്കുകയും അവിടെയുള്ള ശലഭശേഖരത്തെ ക്രോഡീകരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. 14 ഡിസംബർ 1849-ൽ തന്റെ മരണംവരെ അദ്ദേഹം അവിടെ തുടർന്നു. അദ്ദേഹവും സഹോദരനും അവിവാഹിതർ ആയിരുന്നു. Robert Mays തന്റെ Henry Doubleday: The Epping Naturalist എന്ന പുസ്തകത്തിൽ "അദ്ദേഹം കുറെക്കാലംകൂടി ജീവിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ 19 -ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്തനായ പ്രാണിപഠനശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായേനേ" എന്നെഴുതി.[1]
