ഏറ്റവും പ്രഭയേറിയ നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒൻപതാമത്തേതാണ് അകെർനർ[9]. ഒറയൺ നക്ഷത്രരാശിയുടെ തെക്കുകിഴക്കാണ് ഈ നക്ഷത്രം കാണപ്പെടുന്നത്. എറിദാനസ് (Eridanus) നക്ഷത്രരാശിയിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നതിനാൽ ഇത് 'ആൽഫാ എറിദാനി' എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. മുഖ്യശ്രേണിയിൽ നീലക്കുള്ളൻ വിഭാഗത്തിൽ പ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു നക്ഷത്രമാണ് അകെർനർ.ദൃശ്യകാന്തിമാനം -0.46 ഉം കേവലകാന്തിമാനം - 2.7 ഉം ആണ്. ഭൂമിയിൽനിന്നും 144 പ്രകാശവർഷം അകലെ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഈ നക്ഷത്രത്തിന് സൂര്യനെക്കാൾ 1,150 മടങ്ങു പ്രഭയുണ്ട്. B3V വർണരാജി വിഭാഗത്തിൽപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ നക്ഷത്രം ഒരു കവച നക്ഷത്രമാണെന്നും (shell star) അഭിപ്രായമുണ്ട്. അറബിയിൽ അകെർനർ എന്ന പദത്തിന് 'നദിയുടെ അവസാനം' എന്നാണ് അർത്ഥം. എറിദാനസ് എന്ന നക്ഷത്രരാശിക്ക് നദിയുടെ രൂപം സങ്കല്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. അതിന്റെ തെക്കേ അറ്റത്താണ് അകെർനർ നക്ഷത്രമുള്ളത്.
