Turnicidae sunt parva familia avium, quae coturnicibus Phasianidarum similes sed non cognatae sunt. Calidas terras gramineas in Asia, Africa, Europa, Australiaque habitant. Sunt sedecim species in duobus generibus, quarum plurimae in genus Turnicem digeruntur, solum una in genus Ortyxelum digesta.

Turnicidae sunt parvae cinereaeque aves currentes, quae volatum evitare malunt. Femina est copiosiore colorata. Quamquam Ortyxelos meiffrenii monogamus putatur, Turnices vicissim polyandri sunt; ambo sexus nidum in solo una aedificant, sed solum mas ova plerumque incubat pullosque curat, cum femina cum aliis maribus coire possit. Pulli sese ex ovis post duodecim vel tredecim dies excludunt, et iuvenes binis post hebdomadibus volare possunt.[1]
