Tholus cupolatus Basilicae Sancti Petri Romae, a Michelangelo plerumque designatus, anno 1590 perfectus est.

Tholus[1] (Graece θόλος) est structurale architecturae elementum quod concavi sphaerae dimidii superioris simile est, fornix circa punctum symmetricum axiale ducta, saepissime cum basi rotunda. Structuris concamerationalibus ex variis rebus factis est historia longissima, cuius memoria ex praehistoria ad tempora nostra venit.

Tholi corvellati? et tholi veri in Medio Oriente antiquo in aedificiis sepulcrisque mediocribus inventi sunt. Constructio primorum tholorum verorum artifice promotorum in Europa per Revolutionem Architecturae Romanae(en) coepit,[2] cum ei ad formanda magna templorum aedificiorumque publicorum spatia interiora, sicut Pantheum, saepe a Romanis adhibiti essent.
