Sepalum

Tetramerus Ludwigiae octovalvis flos petala et sepala habet (Anglice).

Sepalum (ex separatus + petalum) in arte herbaria (botanice) est pars floris angiospermi. In flore quotidiano, sepala sunt folia modificata quae sub petalis iacent, et flore iam gemmā, alabastrum protegunt. Coniunctim, sepala sunt calyx, petala sunt corolla, et ambae structurae simul sunt perianthum, exteriores sterilesque floris verticilli (Davis & Cullen 1979).

Petala et sepala usitate distinguuntur in petala clara et colorata, sepalaque inconspicua et viridia. Cum petala et sepala sunt similes, vel petala absunt et sepala sunt colorata, tales exteriores floris structurae appellantur tepala.

Merositas, numerus floris sepalorum, classificationem floris indicat: eudicotyledones quattuor vel quinque sepala usitate habent, et monocotyledones palaeodicotyledonesque tria vel conformationem triplicem.

Aspectus sepalorum inter plantis florescentibus magnopere variatur. Saepe sepala maxime deminuuntur, ut tantummodo aristae, squamae, dentes, vel cristae videantur. Multi flores perianthis reductis sunt inter Poaceas. Sepala nonnullorum florum fundo conligantur ut tubum calycis conforment, sicut in familia Lythracearum.[1] Hic tubus potest comprehendere petala et loca ubi stamina adfiguntur.
