Saxum Plimmutense, numero 1620 inscripto, annum subtiliter numerante cum Peregrinatores ex Mayflower in litus egressi essent.

Saxum Plimmutense[1] (Anglice Plymouth Rock) est locus ubi, secundum memoriam a maioribus traditam, Gulielmus Bradford et Peregrinatores qui Coloniam Plimmutam condiderunt ex Mayflower navi die 21 Decembris 1620 rite egressi sunt.[2] Nemo Peregrinator in scripturis hoc saxum commemoravit; prima quidem verba nota ex relatione ad saxum anno 1715 facta sunt, cum in tabulis finium oppidi quoddam saxum magnum (Anglice a great rock) nominaretur.[3] Prima affirmatio scripta, Saxum Plimmutense appulsum Peregrinatorum fuisse dicens, a Thoma Faunce Sene anno 1741 facta est, centum viginti unum annos postquam Peregrinatores in terram Plimmutensem advecti erant.[4]

Anno 1774, cum homines ad aream oppidanam Plimmutae oppidi hodierni transportare conarentur, saxum in dimidias partes fortuite diffissum est. Una pars in area oppidana manebat, sed ad Pilgrim Hall Museum anno 1834 motum est. Cum alia saxi parte iterum coniunctum est, quae in primo loco secundum oram Portus Plimmutensis iam anno 1880 iacebat. Saxum autem sub aulaeo granitis, a McKim, Mead & White societate architectorum designato, nunc iacet.
