Phoenices (sg. Phoenix, -cis; adj. Punicus) sive Poeni (ipsi se Kenaani vocantes) erant gens Antiqui Medii Orientis, qui ad orientalissima litora Maris Mediterranei urbes habebat, Tyrus, Sidon, et Byblus inter clarissimas. Verbum Phoenices significat purpureos, quia vestimenta purpurea mercabantur.

Floruerunt Phoenices in Aetate Ferrea, ab saeculo XIII a.C.n. et 539 a.C.n.. Ob migrationes et nexus commerciales, cultura Punica et orientalis per Mediterraneum occidentalem difussa est, in motu aetas orientalizans vocatum. Deinde dicitur Phoenices ad Occidentem migraverunt; Colonia Punica Carthago in Africa maximi momenti erat. Aliae coloniae magnae Utica et Gadir erant.

Phoenices nautae praeclari mercatoresque boni erant. Excellenti etiam arte naves aedificabant. Iter in Africam et Hispaniam fecerunt, sed nihil ostendit Phoenices in Britannia fuisse.[1]

Et naves onerariae et naves bellicae magnae et clarae erant. Non modo erant triremes, quos et Graeci aedificabant, sed etiam quinquiremes. Vis celeritasque quinquiremium Carthaginensium magnae erant.

Phoenices etiam consonantibus scribere invenerunt et Graecis scribere docuerunt.
