Lingua Magahi (Magahī) ad Linguas Indicas e divisione Indoiranica familiae Indoeuropaeae pertinet; interdum in lingua Bihari et in regione linguistica Hindi numeratur. In India adhibetur ad meridionalem civitatis Bihar partem, iuxta urbes Patna et Gaya, et in nova civitate Jharkhand, ubi dialectus orientalis seu Pañcaparganiyā adhibetur; dialecti aliae, borealis, centralis, australis etiam recognoscuntur. Nomen habet e regione respectiva, Sanscrite Magadha appellata; ibi ante duo milia annorum populus dialecto Pracritica Magadhi usus est, cuius progenies hodierna est series linguarum lingua Bihari (inter quas Magahi), Orissensis, Bengalica, Assamica. Iam in dialecto antiqua Magadhi vox Sanscrita dh in h mutatur, e qua re nomen hodiernum sermonis eiusdem regionis Magahī defluit. Scriptura hodie Devanagari adhibetur, olim Kaithi, sed litteratura Magahi fere nulla recognoscitur; qui hoc sermone utuntur verba Hindi in colloquiis saepius includunt et fere semper in lingua Hindi scribunt. Sunt autem carmina popularia permulta.
