Fretum Sundanum[1][2][3] (Indonesice Selat Sunda) est fretum quod inter Iavam et Sumatram, insulas Indonesiae, patet, Mare Iavanicum cum Oceano Indico coniungens. Altitudo media circa 20 metra, latitudo minima 24 chiliometra est.

Nomen ex Regno Sundano, regno quod in occidente Iavae regione (nunc Iava Occidentali, Banten, et occidente Iavae Mediae parte comprehendente) dominabatur. Etiam ex nomine gentium Sundanarum? derivat, indigenarum Iavae Occidentalis, quia gentes Iavani? plerumque in Iava Media et Orientali habitant.[4]

  1. Haec appellatio a Vicipaediano e lingua indigena in sermonem Latinum conversa est. Extra Vicipaediam huius locutionis testificatio vix inveniri potest.
  2. Sundanum, nomen adiectivum ex Sunda derivatum, legitur in nomine Elasmiadis sundani, mollusci terrestris (Smith et Djajasasmita 1988), atque in Alangio sundano, nomine obsoleto Alangii salviifolii, speciei plantae familiae Cornacearum.
  3. Non confundendum cum Freto Oresundico (medio aevo fretum sundense aliquando appellato) inter Daniam et Sueciam patente.
