Bithynia et Pontus.

Bithynia (-ae, f.; Graece Βιθυνία) nomen est antiquae regionis Anatoliae septentrionalis (vel Turciae hodiernae).

Secundum scriptores antiquos (Herodotum, Xenophanem, Strabonem, etc.), Bithyni fuerunt advenae Thraces. Quod fuit gens quaedam appellata Thyni in Thracia, id bene notum est, et duae gentes cognatae, Thyni et Bithyni, migrasse simul in vicinas partes Asiae videntur, ubi Mysios, Cauconesque, aliasque gentes minores aut eiecerunt aut devicerunt, Mariandynis se ad septentrionem et orientalem sustinentibus. Herodotus dicit Thynos et Bithynos modo vicinos coluisse; sed illi fiebant maioris momenti, quoniam suum nomen regioni dederunt. Postea regno Lydiano adiecti ab rege Croeso sunt, quocum sub dominio Persico (546 a.C.n.) ceciderunt, et in satrapia Phrygiense, quae omnes terras usque ad Hellespontem et Bosphorum continuit. Saeculo IV a.C.n. Bithyni asserere independentiam suam videbantur, quam prospere sub duobus principibus indigetibus, Bate et Zipoete, sustinebant, quorum ille cepit titulum basileos anno 297 a.C.n.. Ultimus rex, Nicomedes IV, non potuit se sustinere contra Mithridaten VI Ponticum, et postquam Senatus Romanus eum ad eius regnum restituerat, regnum testimonio Rei Publicae Romanae legavit (74 a.C.n.).
