Bellum mundanum

Bellum mundanum[1][2][3][4] vel bellum orbis terrarum[5] est bellum continentes superans, cui multae gentes intersunt, cuius theatra multis in civitatibus aguntur, et cuius effectus ad totum fere mundum notum pertinent. Bellum mundanum[6] saepissime ad duo bella magna saeculi XX refertur, quae sunt

  1. primum bellum mundanum (1914–1918 gestum)
  2. secundum bellum mundanum (1939–1945 gestum).

Nonnulli commentatores etiam de tertio bello mundano futuro et praeviso loquuntur. Notio belli totum fere mundum aliquo modo contingentis non ante saeculum XX nata est. Tempus, quod inter finem primi belli mundani et initium secundi belli mundani intercessit (id est, 1918-1939), interbellum appellatur. Ante secundum bellum mundanum, primum bellum saepe "magnum bellum" appellabatur.

Sunt qui notionem 'belli mundani' etiam ad quaelibet bella satis late diffusa adhibere velint. Apud antiquos nonnulli de bello orbem terrarum concutienti loquebantur, sicut in oratione ad Caesarem de re publica habita (incerti auctoris, saepe Sallustio adtributa): "Nam particeps dominationis neque fuit quisquam neque, si pati potuisset, orbis terrarum bello concussus foret."[7] Nec desunt, qui medio aevo et postea dixerunt totum orbem terrarum sibi bello minari.[8]
