Antonius Panizzi (Antonio Genesio Maria Panizzi, Anthony Panizzi, tandem Sir Anthony Panizzi; natus die 16 Septembris 1797; mortuus die 8 Aprilis 1879) fuit principalis Musei Britannici bibliothecarius ab anno 1856 usque ad 1866.

Antonius Panizzi natus est Brixelli regionis Regii Lepidi eo tempore ducatus Mutinensis subiectae. Iurisprudentiae studuit apud universitatem Parmensem et fortasse societati cuidam revolutionariae participavit. Anno 1822 enim a vigilibus ducatus Mutinensis consectatus quippe qui res novas adpetivisset, ad Luganum Helvetiae effugit libellumque de persecutionibus furtim divulgari iussit; sed et ibi quaesitus, a Mutinensibus in absentia morte damnatus, Angliam anno 1823 petivit. Adiuvante Hugone Foscolo, munus praeceptoris linguae Italianae suscepit Liverpolii.

Bibliothecam optimo successu ordinavit itaque praecepit:

I want a poor student to have the same means of indulging his learned curiosity, of following his rational pursuits, of consulting the same authorities, of fathoming the most intricate inquiry as the richest man in the kingdom, as far as books go, and I contend that the Government is bound to give him the most liberal and unlimited assistance in this respect.[1]

Ob labores bibliothecarios eques a regina Victoria anno 1869 creatus est. Nihilominus cum Thomasso Carlyle historico aliquos annos contendit qui tandem, impedimentis a Panizzi oppositis iratus, cum amicis nonnullis Bibliothecam Londiniensem condidit.

Panizzi Iosepho Mazzini, Londinii anno 1844 exsul, adiuvit; Iosephum Garibaldi ad Angliam progredientem recepit; epistulas crebras Prospero Mérimée et Camillo Cavour intermisit; amicitiam vicecomitis Palmerston et Gulielmi Gladstone primorum ministrorum reclamavit.
