천축서과(Caviidae)는 쥐목에 속하는 한 과이다.[1] 천축서(天竺鼠)는 기니피그를 뜻하는 한자어이다. 기니피그, 마라, 카피바라 등을 포함한다. 주로 남아메리카 대륙에 분포한다. 머리가 크고, 꼬리는 짧다. 전신이 짧은 털로 덮여 있으며 모색은 다양하다. 남아메리카의 다양한 환경에서 서식하며, 초식동물로 식물의 줄기, 잎, 열매 등을 먹는다. 새끼를 낳는 태생 동물이다.
