섬여우(Island fox)는 캘리포니아주 채널 제도의 8개 섬 중에서 6개 섬에서 발견되는 여우의 일종이다. 각각의 섬에 6종의 섬여우 아종이 살고 있으며, 진화의 역사를 반영하고 있다. "해안여우"와 "짧은꼬리여우", "섬회색여우", "채널제도여우", "채널제도회색여우", "캘리포니아채널제도여우" 등으로도 불린다.

진화사

섬여우는 대륙의 회색여우와 함께 회색여우속에 포함되고, 섬여우는 회색여우에서 파생된 종이다. 이소성 종 분화(Allopatric speciation)의 일종인 섬의 왜소 발육화의 영향으로 크기가 작다. 지리적으로 고립되어 있기 때문에, 섬여우는 대륙으로부터의 기생충과 질병에 대한 면역력을 갖고 있지 못하며 특히 개가 옮겨 오는 병으로부터 취약하다.

아종

섬여우는 6종의 아종이 알려져 있으며[1] 각 아종은 채널 제도의 섬에서 다른 종들과 독립적으로 진화했다.
