닭의장풀군은 식물 분류학에서, 자신도 속씨식물 내의 하나의 분지군인, 외떡잎식물군 내의 분지군으로 APG II 분류 체계에 의해 사용된다. 닭의장풀군은 APG II 분류 체계가 외떡잎식물군 내에 이름지은 유일한 분지군이다. 그 남아있는 외떡잎식물은 하나의 측계통군 분류군으로 가끔 "기초 외떡잎식물군"(basal monocots)으로 간주된다.
APG II 분류 체계(2003년)에서 닭의장풀군은 기본적으로 초기 APG 분류 체계(1998년)의 닭의장풀군과 같은 식물을 포함하고 있다.
