リチャード・ピート（Sir Richard Peto FRS、1943年5月14日[1] -）はイギリスの統計学者、疫学者であり、オックスフォード大学で医療統計学と疫学の教授を務めている[2][3][4]。
学歴
[編集]ピートはサウサンプトンのトーントンズ・スクールに通い、次いでケンブリッジ大学トリニティ・カレッジのナチュラル・サイエンシズ・トライポスで学び、インペリアル・カレッジ・ロンドンで統計学の修士となった[1]。
研究キャリア
[編集]ピートのキャリアの一つとして、ロンドンの医学研究局の統計研究班から始まったリチャード・ドールとの共同研究がある。ピートは1975年にオックスフォード大学で臨床試験サービスユニット (Clinical Trial Service Unit, CTSU) を立ち上げ、今も共同責任者を務めている。ピートのパラドックスは彼にならって名付けられた。
ピートはメタアナリシスの発展への寄与を理由として1989年に王立協会フェローとなった。彼は喫煙による死亡の研究の第一人者である。「50年前にベテランのリチャード・ドールと共にリチャード・ピートが研究を始めた時、イギリスは喫煙による死亡率が世界最悪だった。喫煙はイギリスの成人男性の死亡原因で半分以上を占めていた[5]。」ピートは1999年に疫学およびガン予防への寄与を理由としてナイトに叙せられ、2011年にはイェール大学で医科学の名誉博士号を授かった[6][7]。

私生活
[編集]兄弟のジュリアン・ピートは、リチャード・ピートと共著で数理統計学（例えば、ログ・ランク検定など）の本を出しており、彼も著名な疫学者である。リチャード・ピートの家族はオックスフォードのカバード・マーケットでタイ料理のレストランを運営しており、ピートはその親会社の重役を務めている[8]。
